Stone Forest Photos By Beifan

How was the Stone Forest formed? By the erosion of wind and rain over centuries or the actions of benevolent Chinese Spirits? The Stone Forest is associated with the Chinese legend of Ashima who was turned into a stone, but there are many variants of this Stone Forest legend. Ashima and our Stone Forest guide both being members of the Sani group of Yi tribes people.
The limestone peaks of the Stone Forest with associated caves and narrow gorges, rise like distorted towers from the Chinese earth, above the heads of visitors. Perhaps the legend of Ashima is more in keeping with the attractions of the Stone Forest than the harsh unrelenting erosion of wind and rain.
