Model Poses For Monkey Picture On Steps Of Old City In Guangzhou

It was an ancient city off the beaten track so we had no idea that soon after arrival, we would taking a monkey picture as a memento of our visit. It was certainly a surprise to see a number of monkeys freely roaming amongst the trees, near a snack bar. When we decided to take a monkey picture or two, the monkey seemed to have assumed that that is what we would be doing! The 'model' in the monkey picture on this page was more interested in what scraps of food it could find, than the photos being taken of it.
There were a number of monkeys high up on the tree branches, some looking as if they were asleep, some chasing each other and leaping from branch to branch. Other monkeys were just roaming on the ground and up and down the steps. One monkey seemed to have been the 'guardsman' and

was sitting by the road fence. Whenever a car or bus came anywhere near its position, the monkey would shake the fence against the posts making a lot of noise. This seemed to be a warning to all the other monkeys to take cover, for they quickly scampered up the trees to safer levels.
The monkey pictures we took were all taken close to the snackbar, as that seemed to have been part of their territory, close to a possible source of food from the visitors to the city! They certainly looked well fed with their fur glistenning in the sunlight. The total nuimber of monkeys in this area is unknown.

Relationship with humans:
The many species of monkey have varied relationships with humans. Some are kept as pets, others used as model organisms in laboratories or in space missions. They may be killed in monkey drives when they threatened agriculture, or serve as service animals for the disabled.
In religion and culture, the monkey often represents quick-wittedness and mischief.
