English Bulldogs had always been one of mother's favourite breeds of dogs so what better birthday gift could she be given other than a english bulldog puppy? Fortunately there had been some pictures of dogs in the local newspaper that had advertised a breeder of english bulldogs locally so young brother and I went to see if there was one that we thought mother would like. There were only four bulldog puppies that had been weaned and were ready for new homes, each one of them being very playful and attention seeking, so it was very difficult to choose just one of them. The owner showed us cups and certificates that her english bulldogs had been awarded at different Dog Shows, and showed us many pictures of dogs she had collected over her years of attending dog shows. We were satisfied that the english bulldog puppy we chose would have a good pedigree. Should we choose this one, or that one? These colors are more attractive than those colors! Questions! Questions! Questions! Eventually we made our choice, a bulldog puppy with a white chest and a two-patch face! Before we left, the breeder gave us some copies of her pictures of dogs and also a small cloth that had been with the litter of puppies, to put in the dog basket that we had bought, which would lessen the stress of separation for the bulldog puppy we were taking away from 'her family'.

When we arrived back home, mother was very surprised and delighted to be shown the english bulldog puppy we had bought for her, and it was promptly named, 'Beauty'! The face of a bulldog can hardly be called beautiful, but the name, 'Beauty', proved to be appropriate as she grew up, because she did have a 'beautiful' nature. When everyone at home had finished nursing and admiring Beauty, mother placed her on the floor of the livingroom, and she immediately started to explore her new home. Beauty even tried to make friends with my sister's cat, but the attention was not immediately welcomed; there was some hissing and raised hairs. Before this exploration was finished Beauty emptied her bladder on the floor, as if to mark her territory, then retired to her dogbasket for a nap! Even a beautiful bulldog puppy needs to have some house training, which would be taken care of in the days to follow.



Beauty The English Bulldog With A Fierce Face But A Gentle Nature.
There are many tales to tell about the life of Beauty the english bulldog with a gentle nature. Even when she was fully grown, the youngest of children would play with her as if she was a toy puppy dog. However, one youngster who came on a visit, was not very happy being anywhere near a dog, and particularly near such a fierce looking bulldog as Beauty. As soon as the youngster came through the door, Beauty would go up to him, perhaps sensing his fear and perhaps determined to annoy him. It is more than likely that the youngster, in earlier years, had experienced an event that had implanted this fear of dogs. Another incident involved a policeman who had been driving his car past our front garden, when he noticed some smoke rising from the front hedge. He came up to ask mother for a bucket of water to put out the fire. When the policeman was walking back up the drive again to return the bucket, he saw Beauty running down the driveway to meet him. The policemen immediately dropped the bucket and jumped over the boundary hedge into the neighbour's garden. The sight of such a fierce looking english bulldog in attack mode, was too much for the policeman, despite assurances that Beauty would cause him no harm. He used our neighbour's driveway to get back to his policecar.
