Picture Of Cat Named Whisky A Tabby Cat Having A Catnap
Why our tabby cat, shown in the cat picture below, was named 'Whisky' has long since been forgotten, as has the name 'Tom' given to another tabby cat. In total there have been four tabby cats that have resided at our home, showing their complete independant natures, compared to the dogs that have sometimes shared their homestead.
A pet dog will regard its owner as its master, a pet cat will consider itself master of its owner! All the tabby cats we have had, have been strays, either meowing at the door to be taken in, or found as kittens by neighbours in their gardens. How these tabby cats came to be lost or deserted is another mystery.
|
|
'Whisky' is the only tabby cat we had that did not decide to increase the cat numbers by having kittens. She was a bit of a roamer and would be absent for a day or so, then return to show a great deal of affection, probably to ensure that she was immediately presented with suitable cat food. Sometimes she would have crazy moments and chase imaginary mice around the house. Could she see what we could not see?
At other times she would bring into the house a dead field mouse or a bird she had caught and just lay it on the floor as if it was her contribution to our next meal. Do all tabby cats have this belief that they must feed their 'servants'?

************************************************************************
One of the tabby cats that shared our home for a few years, had two sets of kittens. The first lot of kittens she brought into the world, we were able to find homes for with friends or neighbours. There was a bit of a problem with the second batch of kittens, five in all, as we were only able to find homes for two of them, hoping that the other three would be settled with other families later.
Two of them were tabby cats, very similar to their mother, but the third was rather an oddball of very mixed ancestors. Every week that went by we hoped they would be given homes elsewhere.

|
Every week that went by the kittens grew bigger. Eventually the time came when we had to accept the fact that our number of permanent cat residents had been increased to four, three of which were almost identical tabby cats. At the time the living room was heated with an open coal fire, protected with a fireguard, and in front of which was laid a woollen rug.
In the evenings, whenever the fire was lit, mother cat and her three offspring would curl up together on the rug in front of the fire, looking very contented. The tabby cat picture below is of Whisky following the same routine!

A black cat is said to be a symbol of good luck and also of big trouble, particularly if the black cat is part of a witch's domain, in the same way as her broomstick. There appears to be no such association for the tabby cat. It is from the markings and colors of its fur that the tabby cat gets its name, perhaps its ancestors were the tigers!
A few years ago a wild rabbit made its burrow under the garden shed. Subsequently baby rabbits started to venture out of the burrow to sample the fresh green grasses growing nearby. Many of our neighbours have cats that like to roam the gardens nearby. Many times while the baby rabbits were growing up, a black cat would be seen

sitting near the entrance to the burrow, hoping to catch one of them. We never saw a tabby cat doing this! The black cat was 'politely' asked to move away as it was clearly well fed and well cared for, it was only its hunting instincts that had prompted it to stalk the baby rabbits.
Many cat pictures show cats 'toying' with a live mouse. Many other pictures of cats show them with arched backs, erect fur, and snarling faces. Black cat pictures are associated with witches and wizardry. The docile domestic cat, whether white, black or tabby, still has many of its wild instincts embedded within them.

A tabby is a cat with a distinctive coat that features stripes, dots, or swirling patterns. Tabbies are often mistakenly assumed to be a breed of cat. In fact, the tabby pattern is a naturally occurring feature that may be the original coloration of the domestic cat's distant ancestors. Tabby coloration is found in many breeds of cat, as well as among the general 'moggy' (mixed-breed or mongrel) population.
