"Xishuangbanna"... Just saying the name of this region of China made it sound mysterious, and so it was! To get to Xishuangbanna we flew from Kunming to the airport at Jinghong. From the plane we viewed the Xishuangbanna landscape with mountains of tropical forests, or contour planted with tea bushes. The legend is that Xishuangbanna was originally discovered by hunters chasing a deer and now tourists to China are discovering Xishuangbanna for themselves.

The largest ethnic groups in the Xishuangbanna region are those of the Dai people and of the Han people. Walking through the streets and markets of Xishuangbanna you see women dressed like the Thai people with their long skirts. Being in Xishuangbanna is like being in a different country and not a special region of China.
