When the new Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River is completed, many of the scenes shown in these photos of a cruise down the Yangtze river, will have forever disappeared. The Cruise starts in Chungking with a walk down many steps to the Yangtze River landing stage, to board our cruiser named, "White Emperor". The cruiser was on its maiden voyage down the Yangtze River, through the Three Gorges and the Gezhouba Dam to Wuhan.
It was an exciting cruise lasting two days and one night, passing other boats on the Yangtze river, and giving an opportunity to marvel at the ever changing scenery. What was seen raised many unanswered questions. A Chinese Pagoda perched on the cliff tops of the Yangtze River had no visible means of access. A Yangtze river side gorge with flats and houses built high on both banks seemed an unlikely site for a riverside town. The livelihood of a farmer in a small isolated dwelling on the steep banks of the Yangtze River, seemed to depend on what he could harvest from the river itself and the surrounding mountains.
When approaching the Three Gorges in the early morning of the second day, the turbulent waters of the Yangtze River looked like liquid gold, in the low sunlight. Safely through the Gorges, we passed through the Lock of the Gezhouba Dam, the first dam to tame the mighty Yangtze River.
